[That’s all the text that goes on the network, and he can’t help sighing as he sends it. He doesn’t know what else to say about it, except... He’s never felt more alone in his life.

Which means there’s a sulking kid in Viridian City Pokémon Center, and otherwise his only communication is on the gear. Which really isn’t anything that new for Sasuke, but the reason is something more relatable this time at least.]

[Yeah confused teenage boy here. He can't think of why, or why Itachi thought he could change everything and told him so... Why did he still want to forgive Itachi despite everything, too?

That ideology applies to a lot of people in this situation, not just your brother.

[ she doesn't mean to offend him because, lbr, Itachi is a cray asshole but Sasuke if you do not join her in her dislike for the elders she will be severely disappointed. ]

What if I wanted to formally retire from duty? Would I be able to?

I wouldn't stop you and neither would the village's elders. But, at the same time, I wouldn't want you to give up your attempts to become stronger because you don't like what the future stores. There's incredible potential within you and I'd hate to see it not passed down to those that need it.

Also, it'd probably irk the village council a lot more if you were active and running. Sometimes the best revenge isn't exacting it at all, but making them think it'll come. [ She dislikes them too, Sasuke. ]

They might survey you in an attempt to make sure you aren't up to no good, but I'll do my best to put an end to that.

[Not a promise to return to active duty, but he's definitely not going to give them what they want regardless. But... What's the point in getting stronger when he doesn't have revenge driving him anymore? That's something he needs to ask himself, whether he realizes it or not.]

They'll find a reason. They wanted to keep Naruto locked up just because he was the ninetails but I wasn't having that.

[ She won't offer much more advice but she hates these folks enough to warn him about them. ]

You have a reason. You just need to find it for yourself. Or perhaps you will find it anyways by training. There's a lot more to honing your techniques besides getting stronger, you know.
